Charities say the case of a 37‑year‑old man released from prison in August reveals a fatal flaw in the mayor’s plan to end rough sleeping in England by Christmas, according to The Guardian. The man, who has been staying in temporary probation accommodation in Somerset, will lose that support in four days and has nowhere else to go.

He told reporters, “It is scary,” adding, “I am not asking for special treatment. But literally nowhere wants to help – I have contacted MPs, solicitors, probation and the council. I am quite tempted to just get myself recalled to prison because it is November. It is cold.”

Probation staff have warned that early‑release prisoners could end up on the streets if temporary housing runs out, putting pressure on the broader effort to curb rough sleeping.

Why it matters

The situation highlights a gap between policy aims to eliminate rough sleeping and the practical support available to people leaving prison.
