A former Metropolitan police officer was found guilty of rape, three counts of sexual assault and perverting the course of justice at Southwark Crown Court, the Guardian reported. Mark Tyrrell, who served in the same unit as Wayne Couzens – the officer convicted of the murder of Sarah Everard – was convicted after a trial revealed he had met the victim through his police work. The court heard that Tyrrell raped the woman, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, by having sex with her after she repeatedly said no. In addition to the rape charge, he was convicted of three sexual‑assault offences and of interfering with the administration of justice. The verdict adds another serious criminal finding to a police unit already linked to a high‑profile murder case.

Why it matters

The conviction of a former officer from the same unit as the Everard killer highlights ongoing concerns about misconduct within that Met police division.
