An Iranian court sentenced award‑winning director Jafar Panahi to five years and one month in prison and ordered the seizure of all his assets, the Guardian reported.
The 66‑year‑old, who won the Palme d’Or at Cannes last year for *It Was Just an Accident*, was sentenced in absentia, his lawyer Mostafa Nili told the Iranian news outlet Emtedad.
Charges against Panahi remain unclear after his return to Iran, despite a previous sentence for ‘propaganda activities’ handed down last year.
In addition to the prison term, the court imposed a two‑year travel ban and barred him from using social media for two years, Nili said.
Why it matters
The ruling further restricts a high‑profile filmmaker’s freedom of movement and communication, intensifying concerns about artistic repression in Iran.
