Authorities in Greece and Turkey have issued severe rainfall and flooding warnings after an area of low pressure sparked powerful thunderstorms across south‑eastern Europe. The Guardian reported that the warnings come as meteorologists expect 100‑150mm of rain this week in central Greece and western Turkey, with higher totals possible in some locations.
In Turkey, the weather turned deadly when a tornado formed during an intense thunderstorm in Antalya, a coastal city in the south‑west. The Guardian said the tornado killed four construction workers on Tuesday.
The same low‑pressure system is feeding heavy rain and strong winds into the region, prompting officials to alert residents to the risk of flash flooding and landslides.
Further east, Cyclone Arnab made landfall in India’s eastern states of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh. The Guardian noted wind gusts exceeded 85 mph and some areas recorded more than 200mm of rain. The storm forced the evacuation of more than 180,000 people and disrupted energy and transport networks.
Officials expect the cyclone to weaken as it moves northward, but it will continue to bring heavy rain to northern and central India over the coming days. The combined impact of the storms across three countries highlights a period of extreme weather that is testing emergency response systems and threatening lives and infrastructure.
Why it matters
The warnings and evacuations show how the storms are endangering people and disrupting essential services across Greece, Turkey and India.
