The Guardian reported that the drama ‘Elsinore’ is the leading contender at this year’s British Independent Film Awards, receiving twelve nominations. The film, directed by Simon Stone, earned nods for best British independent film, best director and best lead performance for Andrew Scott, who portrays actor Ian Charleson in the final months of his life.

Co‑stars Olivia Colman, Billie Piper and Johnny Flynn also feature in the picture, which the Guardian’s Benjamin Lee called “a devastating movie [that] is a reminder of Charleson’s strength and the many men like him and it implores us to remember them too”. The review followed the film’s premiere at the Telluride Film Festival in September, where it has gathered rave responses.

Other titles mentioned among the nominees include Clio Barnard’s ‘I See Buildings Fall Like Lightning’, Ashley Walters’ ‘Animol’ and Mike Leigh’s ‘Tender Loving Care’. In addition to the BIFA buzz, the Guardian noted that Scott is already being tipped as the favourite for the best‑actor Oscar, a win that would make him the first out gay actor to receive the award.

Why it matters

The film’s strong showing at the BIFAs highlights its critical acclaim, while Scott’s Oscar prospects could mark a historic moment for LGBTQ representation in cinema.
