A Tennessee death‑row inmate has spoken publicly for the first time since a failed execution last month, saying she continues to suffer physical and mental pain. Christa Pike, convicted of the 1995 murder of a classmate, survived an injection of a large dose of the sedative pentobarbital that officials later described as botched.

The Guardian reported that her legal team released a statement on Friday in which Pike blamed "incompetence" for the ordeal and said she remains in constant pain. "My body hurts. My arms hurt. My hands hurt. My throat hurts. I still struggle to speak. And the pain isn’t just physical. There is pain in my mind and in my soul," the statement quoted her as saying.

Pike’s comments come a month after the botched execution and underscore her ongoing health concerns while she remains on death row.

Why it matters

The remarks highlight the inmate’s continued suffering after a failed execution, raising questions about the state's execution procedures.
