The Guardian reported that Israel’s president has chosen Yashar party leader Gadi Eisenkot to try to form a new government. The move comes after the Knesset has been deadlocked since last month’s election, when Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s coalition lost its majority. Israeli media said Eisenkot is Netanyahu’s strongest rival and that neither politician has a clear path to power.

President Isaac Herzog told Eisenkot, according to a statement from Herzog’s office, that he intends to task him with forming a government. The formal appointment is set for an official ceremony on Sunday at the president’s residence in Jerusalem.

Why it matters

The appointment could break the current parliamentary stalemate and determine who will lead Israel.
