The Guardian reported that Betsi Cadwaladr University health board is consulting on closing urgent primary care centres (UPCCs) at three hospitals in Holyhead, Tremadog and Bangor. The board said the centres at Ysbyty Penrhos Stanley, Ysbyty Alltwen and Ysbyty Gwynedd could be ended by April 2027. It cited funding shortfalls and difficulties recruiting staff as the reasons for the proposed closures. Betsi Cadwaladr serves roughly a quarter of Wales’s population, so the move has drawn widespread criticism from health officials and the public. Critics argue that losing the UPCCs would reduce immediate access to urgent care in the affected communities.

Why it matters

The potential closures could limit urgent primary care services for a significant portion of Wales’s population.
