The Guardian reported that the British Veterinary Association said the current bluetongue season is the worst on record and a major animal‑welfare crisis in Great Britain. The association’s president told MPs that a surge in cases is putting farmers under severe emotional stress. Bluetongue is a viral disease that affects sheep, cattle and goats, causing fever, lesions, stillbirths and death. In severe cases the tongue may turn blue and protrude from the mouth.

Veterinary officials warned that the disease’s impact is intensifying pressure on the agricultural sector.

Why it matters

The outbreak threatens animal health and farmer wellbeing across Great Britain.
