The Guardian reported that Fox News fell behind most other networks in prime‑time audience numbers on a midterm election night that proved disappointing for Republicans. Preliminary "Fast Nationals" ratings from Nielsen showed the channel averaged 3.882 million viewers between 8 p.m. and 11 p.m., trailing NBC’s 6.519 million, ABC’s 4.906 million, CNN’s 3.927 million and MSNBC’s 3.922 million. The network did outdraw CBS News, which attracted 2.629 million viewers.

The Guardian added that the night marked a huge loss for Republicans, with Democrats taking control of the U.S. House and Senate, and that Fox News felt the brunt of viewer disillusionment with Donald Trump and his party, according to the preliminary audience figures.

Why it matters

The ratings dip reflects waning enthusiasm among Republican viewers for the network as their party loses congressional control.
